Size charts by Product Type

Bikes

The information below is provided as a rough set of guidelines. Bike sizes are determined by the frame size, based on the length of the seat tube. Each manufacturer measures bike geometry slightly differently and it also depends on your own body's geometry and the style of riding you wish to undertake - whether you'll be blasting down trails on your favourite mountain bike or commuting to work on a road bike.

Please feel free to contact us on 0800 298 8898 for further information and advice.

Women's Bikes

Women are built differently with significantly different proportions in three specific areas that come into contact with a bike, as well as in the spaces between them!

  • Hands: Control the steering, braking and shifting of the bike through the handlebars and controls that are attached to them.
  • Feet: Connect with the pedals
  • Backsides: Connect with the saddle

Women also have shorter torsos, shorter arms, and longer legs than a man of the same height. Women's hands and feet are smaller, their shoulders are narrower and hips wider. These differences can affect the way a bike fits, feels, and handles. Bicycles that have been designed to fit a woman, instead of a man, will provide a different fit in these areas.

Different manufacturers have different approaches and titles for their range of women’s bikes, like ‘WSD’, ‘D4W’ or ‘WFG’, which you’ll find on Trek, Giant and Marin bikes. Some modify a stock "unisex" frame by changing to a shorter stem, smaller handlebars, shorter cranks, and a wider saddle. Others actually design their frames differently - usually with a shorter top tube, a more relaxed head tube angle, a taller head tube, and perhaps a slightly steeper seat tube angle.

Road Bikes

Road bikes tend to have larger wheels and very different geometry to mountain bikes in order to make them as light, fast and as aerodynamic as possible.

Hybrid Bikes

A hybrid bike sits between a road bike and a mountain bike - the frame loosely related to a mountain bike, with wheels the same size as a road bike. This kind of bike has a comfortable upright riding position but can deliver pace if the situation arises!

Electric Bikes

A new addition to the CycleSurgery range, electric bikes boost your natural pedal power by utilising a battery-powered motor. Just by pedalling gently, you can reach speeds of up to 15mph, allowing you to get to work as fresh as when you left home.

GoCycle electric bikes follow the one-size-fits-all rule, whereas other brands generally follow similar sizing guidelines to hybrid bikes.

Folding Bikes

Folding bikes are generally one-size-fits-all for people who are 4'10" - 6'4"

Brompton recommend that if you have an inside leg measurement greater than 35 inches, you should consider buying a telescopic seat pillar.

Helmets

Sizing used varies between different brands so the charts below indicate the appropriate size helmet depending on the brand and your head size.

  • Measure around your head in centimetres, just above the ear, to find your head size.
  • Select the most snug helmet size, without it being unconfortably tight
  • Keep in mind that everyone's head shape is different. If you happen to fit between two sizing brackets, it is better to go to the lower sizing bracket if you have a narrow head and up to the next bracket if you have a rounder shape to your head
    • We are legally unable to refund or exchange helmet returns so please be careful when choosing.

Clothing

These charts are to be used as a guideline only. Each brand's clothing fits slightly differently and the cut of the clothes are different depending on the type of cycling the item is intended for - for example, mountain biking clothing tends to come up quite large, while road cycling gear should be a tighter, more aerodynamic fit.

Kids

When you buy a new bike for your child, consider getting them a new helmet at the same time because if they've outgrown an existing bike, the chances are that the current helmet will be too small.

We also recommend that you buy a bike that your child can ride safely now, rather than getting them one they'll grow into.

Kid's Bikes

The size of the wheel denotes the wheel diameter of the bike and this roughly relates to the age of child that the bicycle is suitable for.

Please note that this information is to be used as a guidelines - we recommend that you visit one of our stores for the best fit. For further information regarding our kid's sizing, give our mail order team a call on 0800 298 8898
