The first Brompton bike was built in 1975 in the bedroom of designer Andrew Ritchie in South Kensington. His initial prototypes were crude but innovative and through a relentless refining process Ritchie hit upon a cycle that would become the gold standard of folding bikes.

In recent years, the company has seen rapid expansion worldwide, with stores right across the world in London, Amsterdam, Beijing, Tokyo, Barcelona, New York and more.

Not content to rest on their laurels, Brompton has a large team of in-house designers and engineers who are constantly developing new accessories and improving the design of the bike. They've even branched into the world of electric bikes with the Brompton Electric which keeps the aesthetic of the original with a motor and battery built in.

Every Brompton is handmade in their London factory by skilled craftsmen, who have undergone an intensive 18-month training program and each have a unique signature which they stamp on the parts of the bike they work on.

This culture of accountability shows Brompton’s commitment to quality and helps to ensure that every bike that leaves their factory is built to the highest possible standard.
