BROMPTON X VESPERTINE - NYC EDITION

When NYC based designer Sarah Canner set about designing a bespoke range of clothing accessories for Brompton’s new New York City Edition bike, she set herself a challenge: to combine low fashion with high fashion and create a range of products that are both functional and stylish – a philosophy that can be traced back directly to Brompton and the bike itself.

Built for the Big Apple

S-type handlebars with Ergon grips give the New York City Edition a streamlined riding position, which along with Kojak tyres make it ideal for nipping through congested city streets. Green anodised hubs and detailing offset a sleek, black frame and reflective decals inspired by famous landmarks such as the Manhattan Bridge and the Chrysler Building add to a distinctive New York art house styling.

There are only 1,500 available in the UK, so you’ll have to move fast to get your hands on one.

Cube SL Road SL 2017

Best New Urban And Commuter Bikes 5

Cube has a knack for producing good looking bikes, without compromising on comfort and performance. Their SL Road SL (yep, double SL, that’s not a typo) offers road bike-esque performance with the practical features of an urban commuter bike.

Weight saving double butted tubes form a stiff lightweight frame with built-in fixing points for mudguards, luggage rack and Cube’s CMPT kickstand, available as an accessory.

Shimano Ultegra mechs, cassette and crankset with Deore hydraulic disk brakes form a capable roadworthy gearset, while fat and slick Schwalbe Kojak tyres with reflective detailing on the side deliver speed, comfort and increased visibility.

The devil's in the detailing

Orange detailing on the frame and streamlined Cube 1.1 race saddle offset an understated, matte grey finish, while internal routing protects cabling and preserves the SL’s clean lines.

The Vita Elite is a sporty flat-bar road bike with women-specific geometry and top-class components, for the rider who wants to get fit without sacrificing comfort or style.

A robust E5 aluminium frame with FACT carbon bladed fork provides a tough but responsive platform for hard sprinting with reduced vibration over bumpy surfaces. Durable Shimano 9-speed, 11-34t gearing helps you to make light work of hill climbs, while stop-on-a-dime hydraulic disk brakes keep you safe on busy city roads. Marginal weight gains are made using double-butted tubes, and internal cable routing ensures the Vita’s classic lines remain unspoiled.

Protected by blackbelts

Espoir Sport Reflect road tyres feature Specialized’s puncture saving BlackBelt technology – a protective strip of tightly woven material directly under the tread - and reflective sidewalls improve low-light visibility for safe winter commuting and night time rides.

Whyte Shoreditch 2017

Best New Urban And Commuter Bikes 8

Whyte is a world-renowned British manufacturer, building some of the coolest and best-performing bikes on the market. And for 2017 they’ve given one of their most popular urban models, the Shoreditch, a serious facelift.

Inspired by the mountains, built for the city

Now with an eye-catching matte orange finish, the Shoreditch 2017 is based on Whyte’s signature mountain bike geometry, with a long wheelbase and relaxed head angle for high speed stability and a shorter stem for excellent slow speed manoeuvrability. A rear mech clutch system ensures the chain stays firmly on the teeth when traveling over bumpy surfaces like cobblestones, and an upgraded carbon fork saves on weight and smooths out road chatter.

Tekttro Auriga hydro disc brakes are mounted inside the rear triangle with a custom rear dropout, leaving ample space for a rack and mudguards, while 1x10 mountain bike gearing ensures you’ll never be left wanting on hill climbs.

You’ll be hard pressed to find another bike in this price range that gives you more for your money.

Combining cutting-edge Japanese technology with world-class British design and engineering, the Croix de Fer is a versatile adventure bike with clean, unpretentious styling.

The best of both worlds

Likened by Genesis to a Swiss army knife because of its versatility, the Croix 30 rides a line between commuter and cyclocross bike, aimed at the kind of rider who cycles to work Monday to Friday, then straps on the panniers and hits the trails for a weekend tour.

A robust Reynalds 725 steel frame with Jalco SR240D rims and slick-centred, medium tread Celement X’Plor tyres, easily eats up lumps and bumps on the trail, whilst still giving the kind of road performance you’d expect from a dedicated urban commuter bike. Shimano 11 speed gearing helps to make light work of hills even when the bike is loaded down, and BR-RS505 hydraulic brakes give you peace of mind that should you need to stop in a hurry, you'll be able to.
