Things to Look Out For When Buying Kids Bikes
NB: These figures are to be used as guidelines. We recommend you visit one of our stores for the best fit.
Once you have a rough size guide, make sure that the overall fit of the bike is good too. The child should be able to comfortably stand over the bike frame with good clearance. They should also be able to reach the pedals and handlebars when sitting on the saddle without too much stretch.
Most modern kids bikes are made from lightweight aluminium. Although they will be more interested in the colour of the bike and the stickers on the frame, making sure that the bike is light enough for them to steer and move around with ease is important to building their confidence on the bike.
As a general rule of thumb, most kids will use their bike for lots of different purposes whether it’s a family day out on the cycle paths or around your local trails, riding to school or popping off to visit a friend, so making sure they have a bike that can cope with lots of different surfaces is usually a good idea.
Whilst you might not care much for the look of the bike, to your child it will mean everything. Getting a bike that they love the look of whether it’s the colour, the frame graphics, cool handlebar grips or streamers, finding a bike that they want to show off will probably encourage them to get out on it more often.
Types of Kids Bikes
BALANCE BIKES (2-5 years)
These toddler friendly bikes, known as balance bikes or runner bikes, are a great way for children to learn how to balance and have fun on two wheels for the first time. Without the worry of learning how to pedal or brake at the same time, they can concentrate on their balance, coordination and control.
16" WHEEL BIKES (4-6 years)
On the small wheel entry level bikes things are kept simple with a single gear, v brakes and a good and sturdy upright geometry. These bikes are designed to introduce your child to the joy of riding in a fun but safe way with good stability and easy to use components.
20-24" WHEEL BIKES (6-11 years)
