Bike Cleaning Must-Dos

With the winter also comes mud, glorious mud and that means cleaning. Here are our bike cleaning must-dos to keep your bike running like new throughout the winter.

Green Oil + Chain

It is vital to clean the gearing of your bike after every muddy or particularly grubby ride. The more adventurous of you out there may want remove the cassette and clean the sprockets individually for an ultimate clean and degrease. If you are not confident in removing the cassette and dismantling it completely, then taking the wheel out of the drop-outs will give you plenty of access for a comprehensive clean.

It is important to keep an eye on the chain as a dirty and worn chain can ruin other, more expensive parts of the drivetrain. Cleaning the chain is quite simple through the use of an enclosed chain tool such as a Muc-Off Chain Doc. This will coat the chain in degreaser and prevent residue dirt from splashing onto other areas of the bike. Once the degreaser has done its job and loosened the grime, use a brush or a sponge to wipe away the dirt and dry with a clean rag. Once left to dry thoroughly, apply Muc-Off Wet Lube.

This is where a set of brushes come into their own, as you will be able to clean tight spaces without the need to take apart anything. Apply a spray-on cleaner like Muc-Off Bike Cleaner sparingly to grubby areas and leave for a few minutes for the cleaner to set into the dirt and grime. Now use your brushes to scrub away the mud for a clean finish.
